More than half of Jordanian families are at risk of food insecurity

The National Nutrition Strategy 2023-2030 revealed that more than half (53%) of Jordanian families are exposed to food insecurity.
The strategy prepared by the Ministry of Health – Department of Nutrition indicated that 3% of families suffer from food insecurity, but this percentage varies between governorates and reaches 20% in Tafila governorate.
Among the refugees, the analysis of the World Food Program in June 2021 found that 23.4% of Syrian refugees suffer from food insecurity, with another 60% exposed to food insecurity, and this comes after a decrease in the momentum of international assistance to ensure food security was reported. refugees in Jordan.
Jordan hosts nearly 3 million officially registered refugees, most of whom are Palestinians and Syrians, in addition to more than 600,000 unregistered Syrians, according to the strategy.
The strategy indicated that food insecurity is being highlighted as a growing national problem, in light of multiple factors; These include urbanization, fluctuating food import prices, climate change, the influx of Syrian refugees, decreased remittances from Jordanians abroad, and the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the strategy, Jordan suffers from multiple forms of malnutrition, including; Undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases.
Jordan has witnessed a rapid nutritional transition due to changing diets and lifestyles, by shifting from undernutrition (but with persistent problems of micronutrient deficiencies) towards increasing the prevalence of obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases, according to the strategy.
