Cardiologist and vascular catheter and network specialist, Dr. Amr Saeed Rashid, mentioned that there is a group of people who should perform cardiac catheterization.
In a post on his Facebook page, Rashid explained that the cardiac catheterization is an image of the arteries of the heart in which small amounts of dye are injected to study the arteries.
He added that one of the most important symptoms that the doctor relies on to send the patient to cardiac catheterization is chest pain, but not every patient who complains of chest pain needs this procedure.
He continued: “We summarize with the following points the patients who should be sent to cardiac catheterization:
• If the chest pain accompanies effort and subsides when resting, this indicates that the pain is caused by narrowing of the heart’s arteries, and thus a cardiac catheterization is needed.
• If the patient complains of chest pain and a weakness in the heart muscle was found upon examination with the echo machine.
• If the patient complains of chest pain and the stress test showed changes in the ECG and chest pain occurred during the stress test, he should have a cardiac catheterization.
• The patient who complains of sudden and sharp chest pain with changes in the ECG indicating the presence of angina or heart attack, an urgent catheterization should be performed for him.
• A patient for whom heart nets have been installed or an open heart procedure has occurred, with chest pain similar to the pain before the network or heart operation, so a catheter should be performed for him.
• If the patient complains of chest pain with an increase in the special cardiac enzymes Troponin, he should be sent for catheterization.
• If there is a history of coronary heart disease in the family, or there is a severe and hereditary rise in blood lipids, with any cardiac symptoms, cardiac catheterization should be performed.
As for patients who complain of tingling in the chest or the absence of chest pain, but only shortness of breath, palpitations or dizziness, or that the stress test is sound, 95% of these cases have a healthy arterial examination and there is no need for a cardiac catheterization.
