According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people with chronic kidney disease are unaware of their problem, yet experts note that kidney problems can be detected by looking in the mirror.

According to Dr. Clara Lawson, puffy eyes can be an early sign of kidney disease.

The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the body, and when they are not working properly, the job is not done.

“When the kidneys are unable to function properly, their ability to support the filtration process decreases, causing protein to pass through the urine instead of accumulating in the body, and loss of protein from the body leads to a buildup of fluids and minerals such as calcium and phosphate,” Lawson explains. It causes puffiness in the area around the eyes.

Swollen eyes can be a sign of other, less serious problems, such as stress, lack of sleep or allergies.

Lawson says that if the eyes are puffy but dry and irritated, it’s more likely to be a kidney problem. Yona Rapoport, an ophthalmologist, points out that the presence of such swelling in the morning confirms the possibility of kidney problems. If you experience similar symptoms, see your doctor for advice.
