While a recent study conducted by the psychiatrist at the University of Jordan Hospital, Muhammad Hudeeb, showed that “the depression rate for sixth-year students in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jordan reached 81%. Indeed, medical students are depressed.
According to the study, out of every 10 students, there is a student with a sound mental health condition, calling for a restructuring of the medical college system in a way that takes into account mental health in medical colleges, in order to ensure academic outcomes.
Student Salsabil Abu Asab says, “One of the most important causes of depression among medical students is the ambiguity of future plans in the specialty, meaning that there are plans, but there are no ingredients to achieve them.”
There are also reasons for studying, working very long hours, and sacrificing in social life because of that,” she added.
“81% is illogical or greatly exaggerated,” the student, Ihsan Shaaban, expressed his position on the study, saying, “Nevertheless, I think that the percentage of people with depression among medical students is higher than others, and this is for many reasons, including study or life reasons, And the lack of opportunities and an advanced health system in Jordan, and this does not guarantee a better life, whether financially or scientifically in the future, which is the most important reason.”
As for the student, Roa Ghanem, she believes that “the difficulty of studying leads to depression because of the long years of study, the large number of exams, the constant tension and social pressure.”
Student Zaid Al-Jabri says in this regard that “there are major pressures that every student is exposed to, in addition to secondary pressures according to each student, his life and his problems.”
Al-Jabri added, “The most important pressures that the student is exposed to are the fear of the future, the amount of study, family and friends, and their expectations. They suffer from physical (health) diseases that increase the pressure on them.”
He also noted that “the psychological pressure related to the future step leads to depression, the size of the study and the pressure that the student is exposed to when he becomes close to graduation and faces points he does not understand in the specialty, and the people around him keep remembering him and saying that you are close to becoming a doctor.”
Ali: Study pressure deprives students of their social life
Dr. Samah Ali, for her part, believes that “depression is not limited to students of the sixth year only, but to students of all years of study in medicine, because of the high academic pressure and tension from not succeeding or completing one of the subjects, because the student in this case does not exist for him Only one chance to repeat the subject, and if he does not succeed, he repeats a full academic year, and this is a great disappointment for the students.”
She added to “Jordan News”, that “among the causes of depression among the student, is his feeling of being deprived of the ability to practice his social life and deprivation of friends, in addition to an important reason that the student always excels and enters the medical specialty and provides an average study effort that does not fit the specialty and his achievement is low. When studying, he feels pressured and depressed.”
Habees: Training and practical application must be intensified
For his part, Dr. Firas Habis, assistant in psychology, told Jordan News, “Many students suffer from depression in all disciplines, not the medical specialty per se, because the student sets hopes and aspirations that he wants to pursue during the study period, but unfortunately he may not be able to From that, especially the student who takes theoretical sciences more than applied sciences, and is largely theoretical and cannot apply this science on the ground, so he feels in this situation a kind of frustration.”
Al-Habis added, “Universities should provide the training process more, for example, instead of training for a year, it becomes for a period of one and a half years to two years, so that the student trains and has more knowledge of the scientific material and builds confidence in the knowledge he has obtained.”
He said, “Some students look at the teacher in a very scientific way, and the student finds a large gap between him and the teacher, and feels frustrated that he cannot reach the abundant scientific degree that his teacher has reached, and he feels disappointed with himself.”
Al-Habis stated, “This phenomenon can be eliminated by recommending professors to raise the morale of students so that the student feels that in one moment he will get a good rank of learning, not just a certificate, but the knowledge he was seeking to acquire and apply in his life.”
