Ammon – Australian police opened an investigation, Thursday, after the largest mosque in the country received a threatening letter, in the third similar incident coinciding with the advent of the month of Ramadan.

Local media reported that the message arrived on Wednesday at the Lakemba Mosque, west of Sydney, and included a drawing of a pig and threatening phrases targeting Muslims.

The police said that they subjected the message to forensic examinations, and confirmed the continued intensification of security patrols around places of worship, including the mosque, and in places of events related to the month of Ramadan.

The incident came weeks after a similar letter arrived by mail to the same mosque, which included a drawing of Muslims inside a burning mosque.

As previously announced last January, the police had arrested a 70-year-old man and charged him in connection with another threatening letter targeting mosque employees.

The mosque is run by the Lebanese Islamic Society, which reported that it had addressed the government to request additional funding to provide guards and surveillance cameras, in light of growing fears that it would be targeted.

The mosque is expected to receive about 5,000 worshipers daily during the month of Ramadan.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Muslims constitute more than 60 percent of the population of the Lakemba suburb.

Bilal Al-Hayek, Mayor of Canterbury-Bankstown, said that members of the Muslim community feel “extreme anxiety,” adding that some of them are considering not sending their children to prayer due to security concerns.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the series of threats, describing them as “disgraceful”, especially with the advent of the month of Ramadan.

He added that his country needs to calm political discourse, stressing the need to confront any form of intimidation or incitement.

A recent government report indicated that anti-Muslim sentiment has increased in Australia since the outbreak of the Gaza War in October 2023.
