Ammon – On Tuesday, a petition was published in Israeli newspapers against the draft law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, and was signed by 1,200 people, including former officials, including Supreme Court judges, Nobel Prize winners, heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad, academics, university presidents, the chief of staff of the Israeli army, Dan Halutz and Moshe Ya’alon, and former prime minister, Ehud Olmert.
The petition stated: “We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the draft death penalty law being deliberated these days in the Knesset in preparation for the second and third reading, and we call on the Knesset members to reject it.”
The petition added, “The resumption of the use of the death penalty imposes a moral stain on Israel and contradicts its identity as a Jewish and democratic state. The death penalty is not appropriate for a state committed to human rights and the essence of humanity. It is an extreme and absolute method, and its basic justification is that it deters killers is not supported by scientific research.”
The petition pointed out that the proposed draft law, initiated by the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, includes extremist and unusual texts, “and it distinguishes between blood and blood and practically recognizes that the punishment will be imposed only on Palestinians who killed Israelis and not on others who commit violations of similar seriousness. It also recognizes that the death penalty is mandatory for Palestinians tried in military courts in the (occupied) territories, and by eliminating the preponderance of the opinion of the prosecution and the judiciary and taking away any possibility To lapse or reduce the penalty.”
The petition stated that reinstating the death penalty would be contrary not only to clear global trends, but also to many obligations on the part of the State of Israel under international law, and approving the law would isolate Israel, which has committed not to reinstate this shocking punishment.
