Ammon – A senior Iranian official said that Iran is bringing serious and constructive proposals to the nuclear talks with the United States in Geneva.
The official added that Iran’s approach to the talks with the United States was “positive and serious” but said that Tehran did not have any preconceptions about the outcome.
He continued, “What supports the continuation of the talks effectively is the seriousness of the United States in lifting sanctions and abandoning unrealistic demands.”
The United States and Iran will hold a second round of discussions in Geneva on Tuesday, which began in February following the threat of American military action against Iran, while Tehran spoke of a “more realistic” position than Washington regarding its nuclear file.
US President Donald Trump began threatening Tehran with a military strike weeks ago against the backdrop of the campaign to suppress the protests that broke out in late December, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.
In parallel with Washington strengthening its military presence in the Middle East, Tehran hinted at an immediate response to any attack. On Monday, the Revolutionary Guards began maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz.
After intense regional diplomatic efforts, Tehran and Washington resumed their negotiations in Muscat on February 6. The tour will be held on Tuesday in Geneva, but will be hosted by the Omani diplomacy.
On Monday evening, Trump continued to put pressure on Tehran, stating that he would participate “indirectly” in the negotiations, adding, “I don’t think they want to bear the consequences of not concluding an agreement.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who leads his country’s delegation, met his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi on Monday.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Araqchi presented “Iran’s point of view and considerations regarding the nuclear file and the lifting of US and international sanctions.”
The statement stressed Tehran’s “determination” to adopt “results-based diplomacy to guarantee the interests and rights of the Iranian people, and peace and stability in the region.”
The Washington delegation is scheduled to be led by Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, according to the White House.
“We hope to reach an agreement,” Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said Monday.
The current discussions, which are being held indirectly and mediated by the Omanis between the Iranian and American delegations, are the first between the two parties since the collapse of talks they held last year, but they collapsed with Israel launching a war against Iran in June.
The United States intervened in that war by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities.
Iran insists that the discussions be limited to the nuclear file, which Western countries suspect is aimed at developing an atomic weapon, something Tehran always denies. On the other hand, American and Western officials spoke of the need for any agreement with Iran to include research into its ballistics program and its support for armed groups in the region.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said on Monday, “Looking at the discussions (in Muscat), we can cautiously conclude that the American position on the Iranian nuclear issue has become more realistic.”
He stressed that “Iran’s inalienable rights have been recognized under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” including “peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including enrichment.”
