On Tuesday, Iran intends to close parts of the strategic Strait of Hormuz as a precaution during military maneuvers by the Revolutionary Guard, according to what the Iranian state television channel reported.
The channel’s correspondent covering the event from a location close to the maneuvers that began Monday said: “Parts of the Strait of Hormuz will be closed out of respect for safety and navigation principles.”
He indicated that the partial closure would last “a few hours.”
These exercises came after the United States deployed a large naval force in the region, in an attempt to pressure Iran to reach an agreement on its nuclear program.
Hard-line Iranian politicians have repeatedly threatened to close the Strait, especially during periods of escalating tensions with the United States, but it has never been closed.
About a quarter of all seaborne oil and a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas pass through the strait, according to the International Energy Agency.
The Commander of the Revolutionary Guards Naval Forces, Ali Reza Tengsiri, said that any complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz depends on what the country’s leaders decide.
