AMMONNEWS – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday that the government will not help any Australians residing in a Syrian camp holding families of individuals suspected of belonging to the Islamic State group return home.
Albanese said that the government is ready to prosecute them once they return, adding, “We have a very firm position not to provide any assistance or return citizens.”
Two sources told Reuters on Monday that 34 Australians who were released yesterday from a camp in northern Syria were returned to the camp for “technical reasons.”
The released Australians, some of whom are children, are expected to head to Damascus before eventually returning to Australia, despite the objection of representatives from the ruling party and the opposition.
A spokesman for Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said that Australia’s security services were monitoring the situation in Syria, and added that those who violated the law would be prosecuted.
“Members of this group must realize that if they commit a crime and return to Australia, they will face the full force of the law.”
Australia classifies ISIS as a terrorist organization, and the penalty for belonging to the organization is up to 25 years in prison. Australia also has the power to revoke citizenship from dual nationals if they are members of the organization.
