Amman – US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he will participate “indirectly” in the talks between Iran and the United States regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, which are scheduled to begin Tuesday in Geneva, adding that he believes Tehran wants to reach an agreement.
Trump told reporters on Air Force One, “I will participate in those talks indirectly. They will be very important.”
US officials told Reuters that the military is preparing for the possibility of a prolonged military campaign if the talks do not succeed.
When asked about the chances of reaching an agreement, Trump said that Iran has long sought to take a hard line in negotiations, but learned the consequences of this approach last summer when the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
Trump pointed out that this time the Iranians have an incentive to negotiate, saying, “I don’t think they want to (bear) the consequences of not concluding an agreement.”
* American demands to abandon uranium enrichment
Before the US attacks in June, nuclear talks between Iran and the United States had faltered due to Washington’s demand that Tehran abandon uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, which the United States considers a path that could lead to Iran possessing a nuclear weapon.
“We could have made a deal instead of sending B-2 bombers to destroy their nuclear capabilities,” Trump said, referring to the stealth bombers that bombed nuclear sites in Iran. “We had to send the B-2… I hope they will be more reasonable.”
These statements contradict what Trump said on Friday, when he welcomed the possibility of regime change in Iran and expressed his regret for the failure of negotiations over decades.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, yesterday, Monday, and said in a post on the X platform that he was in Geneva “to reach a fair and equitable agreement.”
He added, “What is not on the table is submission to threats.”
* Questions about uranium stocks
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been demanding that Iran for months disclose the fate of a stockpile of 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium after Israeli and American strikes and allow the full resumption of inspections, including three main sites that were bombed in June: Natanz, Fordo and Isfahan.
