Ammon – US President Donald Trump said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should obtain a pardon for the corruption charges he faces, adding that Israeli President Isaac Herzog should be “ashamed of himself” for not granting him a pardon.

Trump said during an event at the White House that Netanyahu did a great job during wartime, and that the Israeli people should make Herzog ashamed for not pardoning him. He added, “It is shameful that he was not pardoned. He should have pardoned him.”

Netanyahu met Trump in Washington on Wednesday, in their seventh meeting since Trump returned to office last year. The aim of the meeting was to hold talks on reaching an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missiles.

Netanyahu is the first Israeli prime minister to face charges while in office. He has denied charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust since his indictment in 2019.
Trump has publicly called on the Israeli president to pardon Netanyahu several times, and said in late December that Herzog had informed him that a pardon was on the way. But Herzog’s office was quick to deny this.

Under Israeli law, the president has the power to pardon convicts. But there is no precedent for issuing a pardon during court proceedings.

In response to inquiries about Trump’s comment, Herzog’s office said that Netanyahu’s request is still being examined at the Israeli Ministry of Justice for a legal opinion, and once that process is complete, the president will consider the request.

Herzog’s office added, “Israel is a sovereign state governed by the rule of law. Contrary to the impression created by President Trump’s comments, President Herzog has not yet made any decision on this matter.”
