On Thursday, the Syrian Ministry of Defense took over the Al-Tanf base, located on the border with Jordan and Iraq in the southeast of the country, shortly after the withdrawal of American forces that were deployed there as part of the international coalition to combat the “Islamic State” organization (since 2014).

A statement by the ministry included: “Through coordination between the Syrian side and the American side, units of the Syrian Arab Army took over the Al-Tanf base, secured the base and its surroundings, and began deploying on the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border in the Al-Tanf desert.”

Two Syrian military sources reported on Wednesday night that American forces had withdrawn from the base towards Jordan.

Forces from the international coalition led by Washington are still deployed in northeastern Syria, where the Kurdish Autonomous Administration controlled areas, whose forces formed the spearhead in the fight against the organization.

But the Kurdish forces lost their areas of control in January after bloody clashes with government forces, as a result of which the Kurds withdrew from the provinces of Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa, before reaching an agreement between the two parties stipulating a gradual process of merging the military and administrative forces between them in the province of Hasakah. According to the agreement, Syrian security forces entered the cities that were under the control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

In November 2025, the international coalition announced that Syria had joined its ranks in a move that came after the new authorities showed openness towards the United States, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
