Ammon – The Director General of Land and Sea Transport in Lebanon, Ahmed Tamer, revealed that the Syrian authorities informed them that the measure to prevent the entry of non-Syrian trucks into Syrian territory came as a result of internal reasons related to problems that occurred between Jordanian-Syrian trucks and affected all crossings.
Tamer said, in statements to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa, that Lebanon was surprised by the decision, and that the Syrian authorities also informed them that it was not directed at Lebanon and was a temporary measure that was being worked on.
Tamer pointed out that the decision has negative effects on both Lebanon and Syria, given the overlapping supply chains between the two countries, and its impact on food, production, and building materials, explaining that border crossing is currently limited to travelers only.
He also revealed that a recommendation was made to adopt the principle of reciprocity, which means suspending the entry of Syrian trucks into Lebanon, if the measure continues, expecting a joint meeting between the ministries of transport in the two countries to be held to return things to normal.
In turn, the head of the Refrigerated Trucks Syndicate in Lebanon, Omar Al-Ali, confirmed that “the decision confused the Lebanese land transport sector and negatively affected the export of goods to Arab countries.”
He explained in a statement to Kuwaiti News Agency that the background to the crisis is due to a defect in the mechanism of dealing between Syria and Jordan, in light of the increase in the number of refrigerated trucks inside Syria from about a thousand trucks to nearly three thousand trucks designated for external transportation, while about 500 trucks loaded with goods enter daily from Jordan.
Al-Ali pointed out “a disparity in the application of laws between the two countries,” explaining that “Lebanese vehicles in Syria are subject to strict restrictions, while Syrian vehicles in Lebanon move more freely.”
