Activists said today (Thursday) that the death toll as a result of the crackdown that followed popular protests across Iran reached 7,002 people.
At least, amid fears of more casualties.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which provided the most recent figures, said it had been accurate in its estimates during previous rounds of unrest in Iran, and relied on a network of activists inside the country to verify deaths.
The Iranian government provided the only death toll on January 21, announcing that 3,117 people had been killed. The regime in Iran had previously underestimated the number of casualties or did not announce them during previous unrest, according to what the American Associated Press reported.
The American Associated Press was unable to independently verify the death toll, due to the authorities cutting off internet service and international calls inside Iran.
Last month, Iran was rocked by unprecedented protests, and the authorities faced a bloody crackdown that resulted in the deaths of thousands by security forces. There have been limited reports of protest activities over the past two weeks in the face of the crackdown.
