Autopsy results revealed, according to what Reuters reported, that most of the 15 Afghan migrants who died off the Greek island of Chios last week when their boat collided with a Coast Guard ship, died of head injuries and not drowning.

A criminal investigation was opened into the collision that occurred on February 3, one of the bloodiest migrant accidents in Greece in years, as a Coast Guard ship collided with a rubber boat carrying about 39 people, causing it to capsize.

The Coast Guard reported that the migrant boat was moving without navigation lights and ignoring warnings to stop. He added that the rubber boat suddenly changed course and collided with the patrol ship, causing the passengers to fall into the sea.

However, the testimonies of five survivors, reviewed by Reuters, contradict the official story. They said that the Coast Guard did not issue any prior warning and that the rubber boat did not change its course. Later, divers found bodies inside the boat.

The autopsy results are likely to provide investigators with a sharper look at the force and nature of the collision.

One of the judicial documents reviewed by Reuters on Wednesday stated that “the cause of death was serious injuries to the skull and brain,” while other documents indicated accompanying injuries to the chest.

Another document reported “injuries to the skull and brain and then drowning.”

Coast Guard photographs taken after the collision showed minor scratches on its vessel. Three Coast Guard crew members and 24 migrants were injured in the accident.
