The UAE confirms that Algeria’s cancellation of the air services agreement will not affect its flights

Quoting the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Emirates News Agency reported on Sunday that the notification announced by Algeria regarding the suspension of the air transport services agreement between the two countries will not have any “immediate impact on flights.”
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority said that the air transport services agreement remains valid “within the specified legal period,” without providing further details.
“Procedures to cancel the agreement”
For its part, the Algerian News Agency reported on Saturday that Algeria had begun procedures to cancel the air transport services agreement with the Emirates, signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013.
The agency said, “Algeria has initiated the necessary procedures to cancel the agreement related to air services between the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria and the United Arab Emirates, signed in Abu Dhabi on May 13, 2013 and ratified by the presidential decree issued on December 30, 2014.”
The agency has not yet provided any reason for this step, but the Algerian media has been strongly criticizing the UAE for months, accusing it of trying to sow discord in the region.
The Algerian agency added, saying, “In accordance with the provisions of Article 22 of the aforementioned agreement, the UAE contracting party must be notified of the cancellation through diplomatic channels, in parallel with notifying the Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to carry out the procedures required by this organization.”
Sibling relationships
It is noteworthy that in October of last year, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that his country’s relations with all Gulf states were friendly except for one country, in a veiled reference to the Emirates.
Tebboune described relations with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, and Qatar as “brotherly” relations. While he accused the country, which he did not mention by name, of interfering in Algeria’s internal affairs and seeking to destabilize it.
