Ammon – Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen considered, on Sunday, that any potential agreement between the United States and Iran would be “worthless,” indicating that the option of a military confrontation with Tehran remains on the table.
The Israeli website “Ynet”, affiliated with the “Yedioth Ahronoth” newspaper, quoted Cohen as saying on Sunday that “any agreement with the current Iranian regime is worthless,” adding that “regime change in Tehran is in the interest of all Muslim countries surrounding Iran.”
Cohen’s statements came in the wake of the start of discussions between representatives of the American and Iranian governments in the Omani capital, Muscat, last Friday, without yet announcing a date for completing these talks.
Cohen stressed that Israel will act if it sees a direct threat, saying: “Even if an agreement is reached, if a threat against Israel appears and we are forced to deal, we will deal.”
The Israeli Security Council, of which Cohen is a member, is scheduled to hold a meeting on Sunday evening to hold consultations on regional developments.
In the same context, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to go to Washington, next Wednesday, to discuss the ongoing negotiations with Iran during his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Israel demands that any potential agreement between Washington and Tehran include restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program, in addition to stopping Tehran’s support for its allies in the region.
For his part, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said, during a meeting with his Paraguayan counterpart, Ruben Ramirez, that Iran is “killing its people and working to destabilize the Middle East,” warning that Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons represents “a clear threat to peace in the region and the world.”
Sa’ar added that Iranian long-range missiles not only pose a threat to Israel, but their threats extend to European countries as well. “Sky News”
