The French government on Sunday approved the resignation of former minister Jack Lange from the presidency of the Arab World Institute in Paris, after his connection to financier Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of sex crimes, was revealed.

Government spokeswoman Maude Bregon told France Info radio, “I think that Jack Lang made the only possible decision, the only hopeable decision in the current situation. I think the situation was unbearable.”

She added, “I see that there is a clear ethical issue raised,” while reminding her that it is “up to the judiciary to determine what the responsibilities are for all parties concerned.”

Lang held the Ministry of Culture (1981-1986 and 1988-1993) in two governments under the late Socialist President François Mitterrand.

Increasing pressure after the publication of American documents

Calls increased for the resignation of the former Minister of Culture, known for launching the “Festival of Music” that spread across the world, after his relations with Epstein were revealed when the US Department of Justice published on January 30 millions of documents related to the man convicted of committing sexual crimes, especially against underage girls.

Lange (86 years old) yielded to the increasing pressure and proposed on Saturday his resignation from the presidency of the Arab World Institute in Paris, in a step accepted by Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and he announced the start of the search for his successor.

This came hours after he issued a statement in which he defended his “honour”, stressing that the accusations against him were “baseless”, the day after he was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Financial Public Prosecution opened an investigation against him and his daughter against the backdrop of his connection to the late American businessman.
