Iranian authorities have arrested 11 people linked to the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), on suspicion of committing acts of “sabotage,” state television reported on Saturday.

The announcement of the arrest of detainees linked to the banned Kurdish party comes after the widespread protests that took place in the Islamic Republic starting in late December, during which thousands were killed, some of them members of the security forces.

Fars News Agency reported that the detainees who were arrested in western Iran were “in direct contact with members of PJAK, and were seeking to launch acts of sabotage and disturb the security of the population.” It quoted the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Karimi, as saying, “Their identities were determined and they were arrested before they could carry out the operation.”

Since its founding in 2004, the party affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party has been active in the Kurdish regions inside Iran. It has previously launched operations against Iranian forces, and Tehran classifies it as a “terrorist organization,” as do the United States and Turkey.

Highly sensitive relationship

The relationship between the Iranian regime and the Kurds is considered complex and highly sensitive, due to the national and political identity of the Kurds, who constitute a minority.

The PJAK party raises slogans demanding “Kurdish rights,” autonomy, and democracy inside Iran. While the government sees any broad Kurdish nationalist demands as a threat to the unity of the state, which makes the tension permanent.

Kurdish provinces such as Kurdistan, Kermanshah, and West Azerbaijan were often the starting point for popular protests against government policies. This is a result of economic marginalization, high unemployment, and cultural and political repression.
