Amman – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday that her government will send humanitarian aid to Cuba within days as it continues negotiations with Washington regarding the possibility of overcoming the US oil blockade on the island.
In recent months, US President Donald Trump has made repeated threats against Cuba, threatening to cut off its oil supplies and warning that the island is “on the verge of collapse.”
Cuba, which is suffering from an economic crisis, relied for many years on oil supplies from Venezuela, until the US military ousted its socialist president, Nicolas Maduro, last month.
Since then, Trump has said that his country controls Venezuela’s oil, threatening to cut off supplies to Cuba and impose tariffs on any country that tries to help it.
Mexico, which intervened to compensate for the decline in Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba, is under pressure from Washington.
The Mexican President announced this week that her country is using all available diplomatic channels to ensure the resumption of crude oil shipments to Cuba, but that it will not expose itself to the risk of punitive US customs duties.
Sheinbaum, who belongs to the left, told reporters on Friday that her government is preparing an aid shipment “consisting mainly of food and some other supplies requested” by Cuba, to be sent by Monday at the latest.
She added that “diplomatic efforts” are continuing to resume oil shipments, stressing at the same time that “we, of course, do not want sanctions on Mexico.”
Mexico’s oil and petroleum sales to Cuba amounted to 496 million US dollars in 2025, or less than 1 percent of the production of the state oil company “Pemex,” according to what the company announced on Wednesday.
Pemex confirms that these oil shipments are intended for purely humanitarian purposes.
American pressure practices threaten to plunge Cuba into complete darkness, as its power plants suffer from a severe fuel shortage.
On Thursday, the US State Department announced the provision of $6 million in direct aid to Cubans through the Catholic Church in Cuba. This comes after previous aid worth $3 million was provided through the same mechanism.
