The Royal Moroccan Football Federation published a statement on Friday afternoon denying the resignation of Walid Regragui, coach of the “Atlas Lions” team, from his position, as confirmed by several media reports earlier.

The Moroccan Federation said in a statement, “The Royal Moroccan Football Federation categorically denies what has been circulated in some media platforms regarding the resignation of the national team coach, Mr. Walid Regragui, from his duties.”

The Moroccan national team failed to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which the Kingdom hosted a few weeks ago, after losing in a stormy final to Senegal with a clean goal after extra time.

In a statement after the final, Regragui said that he bears responsibility for this disappointment, and added, “Failure must be accepted and must be endured. I am not someone who hides, so today, yes, we lost, and the fault lies with the coach.”

Morocco was the favorite to win the title. Local fans were waiting for the African Cup to be won for the first time in 50 years, so that Moroccan football could complete the series of success in the recent period, after the Olympic team won the bronze medal in the Paris Games and the youth team won the U-20 World Cup. But the loss to Senegal deprived Morocco of achieving its second title in the Cup of Nations after winning the title in 1976. Morocco plays in the third group of the 2026 World Cup with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
