Hundreds of residents of Gabes in southeastern Tunisia participated on Thursday in a demonstration coinciding with a judicial hearing dedicated to stopping the activity of units of a chemical industrial complex that they say are polluted. Studies have shown the disappearance of more than 90% of marine biodiversity in the Gulf of Gabès due to “phosphogypsum”, in addition to high rates of respiratory diseases such as asthma and cancer in Gabès compared to the rest of the Tunisian regions.
