On board this car, the Algerian-French writer Boualem Sansal arrived at a hospital in Berlin to receive treatment, after obtaining a pardon from his country, Algeria, for humanitarian reasons, according to what was stated in the presidential statement. Algeria responded positively to German Chancellor Steinmeier’s request to release the writer, describing Steinmeier as a friend. In July 2025, the Algerian Court of Appeal confirmed a five-year prison sentence against Sansal on charges of harming national unity due to statements he made to the far-right French media outlet Frontier. In his statements, Sansal considered that French colonialism had bequeathed to Algeria lands that, in his opinion, previously belonged to Morocco.
