Amman – A court in San Isidro announced on Wednesday that a new trial regarding the circumstances of the death of Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona in 2020, which became necessary after the first procedure was canceled in May, will begin as of March 17, 2026, in a decision seen by Agence France-Presse.

Seven medical care workers will be retried for possible negligence in their care of the 1986 World Cup champion in Mexico, who died at the age of 60 due to a heart attack during his recovery period after nerve surgery.

The first trial in San Isidro, north of the capital, Buenos Aires, was declared invalid at the end of last May, after two and a half months of sessions and listening to more than 40 witnesses, in the wake of the scandal that saw one of the three judges participate, without everyone’s knowledge, in preparing a documentary series about the trial.

Julietta McIntash, the judge in question, later resigned, as her trial is scheduled to take place soon.

The defendants in the case of the former Italian club Napoli star, who are doctors, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and nurses, are being tried on charges of “premeditated murder,” that is, negligence committed with the knowledge that it might lead to death, and they face a prison sentence ranging from 8 to 25 years.

The San Isidro Court said in its decision issued on Wednesday that a preliminary hearing will be held with the parties on November 12 to present their arguments and establish procedures for the upcoming trial.

The investigation will again seek to determine whether the legend died on November 25, 2020 as a result of excessive alcohol and addiction for many years, or whether his death could have been avoided, and whether there was malicious and perhaps even deliberate intent.
