Amman – Tkiyet Um Ali announced the implementation of a multi-sectoral humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip worth 950 thousand dinars, which includes the establishment and rehabilitation of five shelter units for those affected by those who lost their homes during the war. Each unit includes about 200 tents, 1,000 tents in total, with local funding from Jordanian donor funds that the donors allocated to Gaza, in cooperation and partnership with partner associations within the Strip, and in coordination with the Charitable Organization. According to the press release issued by the hospice today, the shelter units include the creation and rehabilitation of 40 sanitary units (toilets), as well as the construction and equipping of 9 educational classrooms equipped with all the required equipment.
The hospice explained that this intervention comes in response to the urgent needs on the ground, and at a time when the Gaza Strip is witnessing a real crisis related to providing shelter spaces for the displaced and those affected by the war. A special unit was also created that constitutes a safe space for widowed women and families of orphans. The project included replacing tents for families in some cases, and rehabilitating available tents in other cases, as an immediate solution to alleviate the suffering of affected families.
Director General of Tkiyet Um Ali, Samer Balqar, said, “The first phase of preparing these units has been completed, through the establishment of 250 residential tents in the areas of western Gaza, the port, and eastern Gaza. It includes a production kitchen and building a unit that includes 3 classrooms,” pointing out that “the project will be completed with its five units before the middle of the holy month of Ramadan.”
During the last period, the hospice focused on providing food, blankets, and meat through land convoys and airdrops, while the shelter units project represents a transition towards the initial recovery phase, within a flexible approach to the humanitarian response that takes into account the needs and priorities of families.
Balqar stated that the shelter units will include equipped production kitchens that will work during the month of Ramadan to prepare breakfast meals for fasting people at a rate of 5,000 breakfast meals per day in parallel with providing another 5,000 daily breakfast meals at the hospice headquarters in the Al-Mahatta area in Amman and continuing to distribute monthly food parcels amounting to 20,000 parcels per month in all governorates of the Kingdom, in addition to distributing about 200,000 breakfast meals in the governorates of the Kingdom.
As part of its work locally, in addition to its continuing role in supporting food security after the month of Ramadan. These kitchens will also provide employment opportunities for the people of Gaza, within the framework of supporting the livelihoods of families who have lost their sources of income as a result of displacement and widespread destruction.
As part of the hospice initiative, complete classrooms were built, allowing the children residing in these units to complete their education, in addition to providing basic services that take into account their educational needs and providing psychological and social support services to students enrolled in these educational units, in an attempt to mitigate the long-term impact of the crisis on children’s right to education and protection. He also pointed out that, “In the subsequent stage, the hospice will work to implement a school feeding program similar to the program it is implementing in Jordan by providing 100,000 bars of dates to students in Jordan as part of the school feeding program.”
This response is implemented in partnership with local institutions in Gaza, ensuring access to the most vulnerable groups, especially children, and that the design of interventions is based on continuous field assessments of needs, which reflects the hospice’s commitment to a humanitarian approach that places human dignity and rights at the core of relief work.
