Hala News – The parliamentary committees: Environment and Climate, Energy and Mineral Resources, and Agriculture and Water held a joint meeting, today, Tuesday, headed by Representative Jihad Abawi, to review national documents related to climate change and related legislation, within the cooperation program with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and in the presence of representatives of the Foundation.
Abawi stressed that climate change has become a national challenge whose repercussions affect various sectors, especially food and water security and the energy sector, which requires the development of an integrated legislative framework that enhances response to environmental and climate changes, in addition to activating accountability mechanisms, in order to achieve sustainable development goals and preserve the rights of future generations.
He pointed out that the role of the House of Representatives is not limited to approving legislation, but extends to monitoring and evaluating the impact of public policies and ensuring their alignment with international obligations, in a way that supports climate change adaptation policies, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation with national and international institutions to modernize legal frameworks and direct financing programs towards the most affected sectors, thus contributing to achieving climate justice in Jordan.
In turn, Representatives Jamal Qammoh, Abdul Hadi Braizat, Hussein Krishan, and Khader Bani Khaled stressed the importance of integrating efforts between the various parties concerned with climate issues, calling for modernizing legal and regulatory frameworks, strengthening oversight of the implementation of national strategies, and ensuring effective follow-up of international financing programs allocated to development goals.
For his part, Environmental Advisor Omar Shoshan gave a detailed presentation on the legislative frameworks and government policies related to the climate change file, reviewing the historical background of Jordan’s involvement in the relevant international agreements and the national obligations resulting from them, in addition to the risks of climate change and its repercussions on the energy, agriculture and water sectors.
He highlighted the importance of developing parliamentary action mechanisms in the field of environment and climate, by aligning legislation with the goals of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), integrating climate considerations into the general budget, and activating the supervisory role on international financing allocated to climate programs, in addition to promoting an investment environment that takes into account climate economics and the requirements of sustainable development.
