Hala News – The Tourism and Heritage Committee in the Senate, headed by Ain Michel Nazzal, and in the presence of the Chairman of the Tourism Committee in the House of Representatives, Salem Al-Omari, and the heads of tourism associations, discussed the development of legislation regulating the sector, most notably the Tourism Law.
The meeting was attended by representatives of associations: tourist restaurants, Jordanian hotels, tourism agents, tourism and travel guides, tourist transportation, and the Jordanian Association for Traditional Crafts and Industries.
Al-Ain Nazzal spoke about the interaction and partnership between the public and private sectors in this sector, which is one of the most prominent components of the Jordanian economy, as it works to provide job opportunities and employ workers, in order to develop the tourism process.
He pointed out the necessity of working to create an umbrella or unifying body, represented by the establishment of a Supreme Tourism Council, which is responsible for organizing efforts and unifying relevant references, stressing the importance of shifting towards participatory governance by enhancing networking and integration between the public and private sectors.
Al-Ain Nazzal stated that this step would contribute to developing a comprehensive national strategy to advance the tourism sector, based on long-term planning and coordination of roles between the various concerned parties, in order to achieve sustainable tourism development and raise the level of services and competitiveness.
In turn, representatives of Jordanian tourism associations stressed that the tourism sector faces a number of challenges that require urgent treatment, foremost of which is the multiplicity of references and overlapping powers between the concerned authorities, pointing to the need to develop the legislative and regulatory framework to keep pace with the sector’s requirements and to contribute to improving the investment environment and increasing competitiveness.
They pointed out the importance of strengthening governance and institutional coordination by creating a comprehensive umbrella for the sector, and revitalizing the tourism movement to become sustainable and year-round, not seasonal.
