The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided Thursday to award Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasnahorkai the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2025. The committee said in a statement that it chose to honor the Hungarian writer “for his astonishing and visionary work that reaffirms the power of art in the midst of near-apocalyptic terror.” The committee described Krasnahorkai, who is considered one of his country’s greatest living writers, as “a great epic writer who falls in the Central European tradition extending from Kafka to Thomas Bernhardt, and who is distinguished by absurdity and comic exaggeration.”
