The National Museum in Damascus, one of the most ancient cultural institutions in the Middle East, was subjected to a theft on Monday that included six ancient statues. The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria reopened the doors of the museum on January 8, 2025, after locking them on the eve of the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, for fear of theft and looting. The museum administration confirmed at the time that “there were no infringements on the museum.”
