The Compass – Wednesday marks the two-year anniversary of Jordan’s detection of the first infection with the emerging coronavirus, coinciding with the government’s start to implement “mitigating” measures related to the pandemic.

The former Minister of Health, Dr. Saad Jaber, announced on March 2, 2020, the first infection with the virus, and it belonged to a Jordanian who came from Italy. At that time, the patient was subjected to isolation in the epidemiological department of Prince Hamzah Hospital in Amman.

Jaber said, at the time, that the injured entered the Kingdom, before activating the quarantine procedures for Jordanians coming from Italy. On March 13, 2020, Jaber announced the recovery of the only person infected with the Corona virus and his departure from Prince Hamzah Hospital with his colleague suspected of being infected, after laboratory tests confirmed his recovery, and “Jordan is free of any confirmed case of the Corona virus.”

And Jordan later canceled the quarantine of those coming to it from abroad, followed by measures, the latest of which was the government’s announcement that mitigating measures would enter into force on Tuesday, which included reducing the period of home isolation for people infected with the virus to 5 days, starting from the date of taking a sample for the detection of corona virus “BCR” and without the need to conduct the same examination. After the end of the isolation period, as well as canceling the procedures related to quarantine contacts with Corona patients.

After Jordan recorded 84 cases of the virus, most of them coming from abroad, between March 15-20, 2020, the government announced on the 20th of that month, imposing a comprehensive curfew in all regions of the Kingdom, which took effect from March 21 of that year.

At that time, a royal decree was issued approving the Cabinet’s decision, announcing the implementation of Defense Law No. 13 of 1992, in all parts of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, as of March 17, 2020.

Jordan experienced 4 waves of the spread of the Corona virus, which included various variants of the epidemic, during which 35 defense orders were issued.

And the most rapidly spreading mutant Omicron is currently prevalent in Jordan, and officials indicate that it is less severe than the Delta mutant that was prevalent previously in Jordan.

On Tuesday, Jordan recorded 14 deaths among those infected with the Corona virus, and 6,520 new infections with the epidemic; This brings the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 16,38,228, according to the Ministry of Health.

The number of deaths has risen to 13,849 since the start of the pandemic.
