An expert in water and environmental affairs, Mona Hindi, confirmed that about 3-4 farms in Jordan consume 100 million cubic meters of Disi water annually, an amount equal to the need of Jordanians for drinking water.

An Indian woman, speaking to the “Voice of the Kingdom” program on “Al-Mamlaka” channel, pointed out this evening, Tuesday, that the water supplied to the farms is “drinkable”, and therefore should not be used for agriculture, noting that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation is aware of this.

The water and environment expert identified the problems of the water sector in the Kingdom with a number of reasons; The first is that there is no funding for major water projects such as the national carrier project, and there is poor management and a lack of expertise at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation.

She pointed out that the reasons include the deterioration of networks, the increase in losses, and the failure to control water thefts that take place through their networks and lines.

Hindi revealed that the lack of use of renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy, is one of the reasons for the problems that the water and irrigation sector suffers from in the Kingdom, noting that the Ministry of Water’s annual electricity bill amounts to 210 million dinars.

She believed that resorting to the use of alternative energy would save the Ministry of Water 100 million dinars annually.

Hindi considered that the problems include poor urban planning, indicating that 68% is the proportion of sewage service in the Kingdom, calling the state to civilized development.

She pointed out that the refugee movements that the Kingdom witnessed increased problems for the water sector.

On the other hand, the rapporteur of the Energy Committee at the National Economic Workshop, Rania Hindawi, said that the accumulated debt is one of the most important challenges facing the Electricity Company.

Hindawi added that 80% of the Kingdom’s energy sources are imported.
