The Court of Cassation upheld a ruling by the State Security Court to imprison a man for more than two years after being convicted of drug possession in Ramtha.

The State Security Court declared the accused guilty of possession of illegal tablets and other drugs with the intent to sell them locally on December 20, 2019, and sentenced him to three years in prison and a fine of 3,000 dinars.

However, the State Security Court reduced the sentence to two and a half years in prison “because he is young and deserves a second chance in life,” according to the court minutes, and also kept the fine against the defendant of 3,000 Jordanian dinars.

The Drug Enforcement Administration men were informed that the accused had hidden drugs in his house, and the movements of the accused were monitored before the raid on his house. Upon searching the house, the security men found 1,500 Captagon pills and other drugs hidden inside the house.

The defendant appealed the ruling of the State Security Court, claiming that it failed to examine the investigation procedures and that “the interrogation of the defendant was not carried out in accordance with the law.”

However, the Court of Cassation ruled that the State Security Court followed the correct procedures in sentencing the defendant, that the investigation procedures were meticulous and that the defendant received the appropriate punishment.
