In light of the rapid urban expansion and population growth in Amman, traffic congestion has become a daily challenge that affects productivity, the environment, and quality of life.
Based on long operational experience in fleet management and transportation systems, I put this practical vision in the hands of decision makers that can be implemented within 12-18 months.
First: redistributing school hours on regular days
Suggested:
• School group starts at 8:00 am
• Another group starts at 9:00 am
the goal:
• Breaking down the morning rush
• Distribution of pressure on the traffic network
•Reducing the number of operating vehicles
Expected impact:
• Reducing morning congestion by 15-25%.
• Reducing travel time
• Improving safety in front of schools
•Reducing operational costs
It is recommended to coordinate the decision with the public and private sectors to implement parallel flexible working hours.
Second: Re-engineering the rotors (converting them to a U-Turn system)
Idea:
• Prevent turning inside the roundabout
• Create U-Turn slots before intersection
• Keep the movement straight without disruption
This model is in place in Michigan and is known as Michigan Left.
It is applied in major cities such as Jeddah in Saudi Arabia
Benefits:
• Reducing traffic conflict points
• Increase traffic flow
• Reducing side accidents
It can be applied gradually to selected circles with high density.
Third: Permanently ban double parking
Required action:
• Electronic instant fines
• Towing the vehicle within 10 minutes
• Smart cameras for monitoring
In coordination with:
• Greater Amman Municipality
• Central traffic management
Impact:
• Freeing entire lanes that are currently closed
• Reducing congestion significantly, especially in commercial streets
Fourth: Establishing emergency bays.
the goal:
• Immediately withdraw disabled vehicles from the main lane
• Prevent sudden suffocation
It is recommended to apply them as an example to:
• King Abdullah II Street
• Jordan Street
• Airport Road
Fifth: Obliging the driver to agree to tow the vehicle when it breaks down
Suggested:
• Linking license renewal to an annual withdrawal subscription
• Inclusion in compulsory insurance
Results:
• Reducing the dwell time of a broken down vehicle
• Enhance safety
• Reducing sudden crises
Complementary supportive measures
1- Synchronized smart signals (Green Wave System)
2- Enhancing public transportation and rapid bus transportation
3- Establishing Park & Ride parking lots on the outskirts of the city
(Parking the car and using government transportation)
4- Organizing the loading and unloading of students in front of schools
Expected results within one year
• Reducing congestion by 25-35%.
• Reducing daily travel time
• Reducing fuel consumption
• Reduce emissions
• Raising the level of traffic safety
conclusion:
Addressing traffic congestion in Amman does not require expensive projects as much as it requires bold regulatory decisions, strict implementation, and smart traffic management.
This vision is applicable, its results are measurable, and its impact is direct on the lives of citizens and the national economy.
And for the rest of the talk…
