From the valleys of the town of “Al-Na’imah” in Irbid Governorate, where the land speaks of the authenticity of history, all the way to the corridors of the prestigious University of Wisconsin in the United States of America, a Jordanian story appears to us that was crafted with the ink of self-made and woven with the threads of the culture that he loved to the point of intoxication. Professor Dr. Fawaz Abdel-Haqq Al-Zboun was not just a passerby in the record of presidents who succeeded one another at the helm of Jordanian academia. Rather, he was and still is an exceptional case that combined the rigor of the scientific method with the sweetness of human humility.
From “Naima” to internationalism: the journey of carving in rock
The path was not paved with winds for this rural boy who carried within him an ambition that reached the sky. The “client” traveled abroad to knock on the doors of applied linguistics, returning from America with a doctorate degree in 1985 AD. He did not return with just an academic degree, but rather with an integrated intellectual project in “Theoretical and Applied Linguistics”, carrying a strategic vision aimed at empowering the Arabic language in institutions of higher education, with an unparalleled mastery of the techniques of the English language and its literature, which made him a knowledge bridge between the East and the West.
Yarmouk and Al-Hashimiyya: fingerprints engraved in the conscience of institutions
Dr. Fawaz moved to pivotal leadership positions, each of which left an impact that cannot be erased by the passage of time:
At Yarmouk University: He led the Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies with a developmental vision, motivating researchers to publish in prestigious international journals.
At the Hashemite University (2020 – 2024 AD): During his reign, the university witnessed a “white revolution” in international classifications (such as QS and Times), as the university turned into a research beehive.
Academic development: It was not limited to rigid administration, but rather focused on creating specific specializations that keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, while preserving national identity as a basic foundation for building the student’s personality.
The Humanitarian Leader: Breaking “prestige” and building bridges
What distinguishes Abu Muhammad is his spontaneous charisma, which made his office a “diwan” open to students rather than elites. He broke the barrier of isolation imposed by the position, and was repeatedly seen sitting among students in the courtyards, listening to their concerns with the heart of a father, and directing their paths with the mind of an expert. He is an orator who masterfully masters the Arabic language. In his speech, he combines the eloquence of a linguist, the strength of an academic’s argument, and the magnificence of authentic Bedouin pronunciation, making him a figure of national consensus who is appreciated by the tribe, society, and the state.
Identity guard and supervisor of the Arabic Language Academy
Away from the hustle and bustle of administration, Dr. Fawaz stands out as a soldier stationed in the trenches of the English language. Through his active participation in the Jordanian Arabic Language Academy, he devoted his scientific efforts to defending “Arabization” and confronting the dominance of foreign languages in scientific curricula. He deeply believes that “a nation that borrows its language borrows its thought,” so his research, which exceeded a hundred, revolved around protecting national memory by preserving the Arabic language.
