The University of Jordan was never an ordinary educational institution. It was the “mother of universities” and the home of academic expertise and knowledge in Jordan. However, what it witnessed during the era of its president, Professor Dr. Nazir Obeidat, constituted a turning point in its administrative and financial history.
At a time when financial challenges were putting pressure on educational institutions, the University of Jordan was able to record a remarkable achievement of reaching zero debt, an achievement that can only be viewed as a product of conscious management and rational financial planning that keeps pace with governance.
Eliminating debt was not a goal in itself, but rather was a gateway to redirecting resources towards academic development and infrastructure, as the university witnessed during this stage a tangible modernization of its facilities, development of academic programs, and support for scientific research, in addition to investing in digital transformation and enhancing the university environment for students and faculty members.
The experience of the University of Jordan during the era of Dr. Nazir Obeidat confirms that true reform in higher education begins with good management and enhancing integrity and transparency, and that universities are capable, when vision and leadership are available, of overcoming crises and achieving financial sustainability without compromising the quality of education or their national role.
Today, the University of Jordan stands as a role model not only as an ancient academic institution, but also as a living example that sound planning, transparency, and responsible leadership are capable of transforming challenges into success stories recorded in the nation’s history.
