Hala News – Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Government Communications organized a symposium entitled “Media and Information Literacy” for government employees from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the Securities Commission, the National Library Department, and the Jordan Museum.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry, Dr. Zaid Al-Nawaisa, stressed that media and information literacy has become an indispensable national necessity in light of the unprecedented flow of media content, stressing that possessing the skills of analysis, verification, and conscious interaction with information constitutes the first line of defense in confronting misinformation and protecting public awareness.
He said during the symposium that the ministry continues to implement training programs and specialized seminars targeting employees of ministries and government institutions, with the aim of promoting responsible media practices.
He pointed out that the concepts of media literacy have become part of the educational system, and the programs of youth institutions and civil society, ensuring easy access to them and expanding the circle of benefit from them.
Al-Nawaisa explained that media education is no longer just an additional skill, but rather an essential tool for building critical thinking, enhancing community immunity, and establishing a society that is more aware and capable of dealing responsibly with media and information.
For her part, Head of the Department of Journalism and Media at Middle East University, Dr. Sabah Al-Harahsheh, said that the role of the Ministry of Government Communications is pivotal in enabling the public to distinguish between professional media and misinformation, stressing the importance of practicing media awareness and not circulating news of questionable credibility.
She added that the family faces increasing challenges in light of the widespread spread of social media, which requires establishing educational controls and enhancing the culture of critical thinking among children.
During the symposium, Al-Harahsheh touched on the power of language in shaping public awareness, and the importance of using terminology accurately, explaining concepts such as “agenda setting” and “framing the news,” and their role in directing media messages. She also reviewed the difference between constructive criticism and hate speech, and the most prominent logical fallacies common in digital content, stressing the necessity of supporting any proposal with objective data and arguments.
