In a high-level diplomatic step that carries profound political, economic and cultural dimensions, His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein made an official visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on November 12 and 13, 2025, in response to the invitation of His Excellency President Long Kong. This historic visit – the first of its kind by a Jordanian monarch to Hanoi – comes at a time when the two countries celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them (August 9, 1980 – August 9, 2025), opening a new bright page in the process of cooperation between Amman and Hanoi.
Political and diplomatic dimensions: from traditional friendship to strategic partnership
During the visit, His Majesty the King met with His Excellency President Long Cong, Secretary-General of the Communist Party Thu Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Speaker of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Manh. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in the fields of defence, security and technology, with an emphasis on raising the level of political representation and high-level exchange.
His Majesty also affirmed Jordan’s firm position on regional and international issues, especially the necessity of reaching a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, ending the occupation, and establishing an independent Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This visit is not just a protocol meeting, but rather a turning point that transforms relations from traditional friendship to a multi-dimensional strategic partnership, reflecting His Majesty’s vision of diversifying Asian partnerships and strengthening Jordan’s position as a civilizational bridge between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
The economic boost: bold ambitions towards a billion dollars
Economic aspects formed a main focus of the talks, as the volume of trade exchange between the two countries in 2024 reached about 188 million US dollars. The two sides agreed on an ambitious goal of raising this number to $500 million by 2030, and then to $1 billion by 2035.
Among the most prominent areas of future cooperation are:
• Agriculture and food security: exchange of agricultural, livestock and aquatic products, while benefiting from Vietnam’s experience in abundant production.
• Pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries: Strengthening partnerships in this vital sector.
• Halal products and their standards: Jordan is distinguished by its world-leading position in issuing halal certificates.
• Digital transformation and technology: including artificial intelligence, technical education, and the knowledge economy.
His Majesty the King also delivered a speech at the Jordanian-Vietnamese Business Forum, which is a vital platform for linking the private sector in the two countries and opening new investment horizons.
The humanitarian and educational dimension: building bridges between the two peoples
The visit was not limited to official aspects, but extended to enhancing cooperation in the fields of education, youth and entrepreneurship. Jordan is looking forward to benefiting from the pioneering Vietnamese experience in rapid growth and digital transformation, while Vietnam appreciates Jordan’s strategic location as a gateway to Arab and African markets.
Conclusion: A stepping stone towards a shared, prosperous future
The visit of His Majesty King Abdullah II to Vietnam represents a defining moment in the history of Jordanian-Vietnamese relations, transforming them from the stage of friendship to the era of comprehensive strategic partnership. It is a wise step that reflects His Majesty’s vision of building balanced alliances, diversifying partnerships, and strengthening Jordan’s position on the international stage.
Through this visit, Jordan consolidates its position as a country of peace, moderation, and development, and opens wide doors for mutual investments, knowledge exchange, and civilizational cooperation that benefits the peoples of both countries, and contributes to building a more stable and prosperous world.
