In light of increasing environmental challenges and rising demand for energy, Jordan is emerging as a pioneering model that is steadily moving towards a sustainable future. Between the bright sands of the desert and the wind waves, the opportunity of a homeland capable of transforming environmental challenges into an engine for economic growth and creating sustainable opportunities is evident, in accordance with the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein the Great: “Transforming challenges into opportunities.”

Jordan faces complex challenges, from water scarcity and the high cost of imported energy, to the urgent need to shift towards a sustainable green economy. Recent years have witnessed a significant decrease in rainfall by more than 20% compared to the decade 2000-2010, which has directly affected agriculture, water resources and the national economy, and makes effective and sustainable resource management a national necessity. In this context, clean energy projects and desalination technologies are emerging as strategic tools to enhance water and energy security.

The Hashemite leadership, with the vision of His Majesty the King, affirms that green transformation is not an option but rather an investment for future generations and a guarantee of the Kingdom’s water and energy security. The leadership emphasized accelerating renewable energy projects, promoting innovation, and consolidating partnership between the public, private sectors and the local community to ensure the sustainability of resources and protect the environment.

Jordan has adopted clear policies to achieve this vision, including the National Energy Plan 2020–2030, the National Contribution to Reduce Emissions, and the pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2050. National legislation, such as the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Law and the General Electricity Law, have also formed the basic foundation for enabling citizens to produce private energy and sell the surplus, establish energy storage units, and strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors.

His Highness the Crown Prince, Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, also paid great attention to supporting young people in the fields of green entrepreneurship and renewable energy, as they are the real energy for change, transforming challenges into tangible opportunities, and building a generation that is aware and responsible towards the environment.

From a legal perspective, environmental and renewable energy legislation constitutes a qualitative shift in national thought, as it combines environmental protection and sustainable economic development. However, practical application remains the true criterion for success, which requires integrating environmental and renewable energy laws with water and waste management laws, and adopting environmental impact assessment mechanisms before granting licenses to new projects. Legislation must also be updated to keep pace with modern technologies such as green hydrogen and energy storage systems, and provide financial and legislative incentives for innovative projects.

Strengthening competencies and experts in the fields of energy, environment and water is essential to ensure the success of projects and achieve innovation. Oversight must also be strengthened through an independent body, the use of advanced digital monitoring systems, and linking legal compliance to government support, while empowering the community and youth through awareness programs to encourage the installation of solar panels, improve energy efficiency, and support small and medium enterprises.

Field experiments confirm the success of this approach, such as the Tafila wind farm with a capacity of 117 MW and the Baynounah solar power plant with a capacity of 200 MW, as models of effective partnership between the public and private sectors. At the international level, the experiences of countries such as Germany, which was able to achieve more than 50% of its electricity needs from renewable sources, and the UAE, which reached the production of more than 2.5 gigawatts of solar energy, show qualitative achievements that Jordan can benefit from.

Transitioning towards a green economy is not a choice but a national commitment to protect the environment, enhance energy and water security, and create sustainable economic opportunities for all Jordanians. The future begins today with a small step from each individual, such as installing home solar panels, rationalizing water consumption, or supporting small green projects, but it carries the entire nation towards a better tomorrow. Environmental law is not just a regulatory framework, but a social contract between humans and their environment that translates the values of justice into protection for the future.

To implement this vision on the ground, renewable energy projects must be accelerated, new solar and wind plants must be established in various governorates and connected to the national grid flexibly, while water desalination and reuse technologies must be expanded to compensate for the lack of water resources and enhance water security. Citizens and youth must also be empowered by providing incentives to install home solar panels, supporting green small and medium enterprises, strengthening monitoring and evaluation by using smart systems to monitor energy and water consumption, and linking compliance with laws with government support. It is necessary to integrate environmental and energy legislation with natural resource management to ensure the sustainability of agricultural lands, water, and energy, in addition to training programs and building specialized national competencies, and community awareness campaigns to encourage sustainable environmental practices, and to benefit from international partnerships to accelerate the national transition to clean energy and green hydrogen.

This national path towards a green economy and environmental protection is not just a plan or a set of projects, but rather a national duty and trust before history and future generations. Every individual and every institution, from government to civil society, must be an active partner in implementing this vision. Commitment to these priorities reflects devotion to the Hashemite leadership and our sincere desire to transform challenges into tangible opportunities, and ensures that Jordan is an Arab model for sustainability, water security, clean energy, and sustainable economic development. The future begins today with clear, practical steps, and hard and continuous work, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Highness Crown Prince Hussein, so that Jordan remains a bulwark for the nation and a shield for its people.

Jordan will remain an Arab model for the balance between development and environmental protection, based on its wise Hashemite leadership, the determination of its loyal people, and its belief that sustainability is not a slogan but a way of life. May God protect Jordan, its people, our Hashemite leadership, our security services, and our Mustafa Arab army, the focus of the leader’s trust, the homeland’s fence, and its impenetrable shield.
