The Court of Cassation upheld a criminal court ruling that sentenced a man to more than 6 years in prison after being convicted of molesting a woman in Zarqa.

The Criminal Court found the accused guilty of sexual harassment and sentenced him to four years in prison, but decided to increase the prison term to 6 years and 4 months because the convict had a criminal record.

The court papers said that the victim’s husband left her in their house and left, and while she was walking towards her house, “the defendant, who happened to be in the area, followed her and touched the private parts of the victim who screamed to draw attention,” before she immediately fled and reported to the police.

The defendant appealed the verdict through his lawyer, claiming that the prosecution “failed to present any strong evidence” implicating him, and the defense also claimed that the victim made contradictory statements that could not be used as evidence against his client.

Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the sentence, which ruled that the procedures of the Assize Court were accurate and that the accused had been sentenced to the appropriate punishment.
