Amman Today – The representative of the food sector in the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, Engineer Jamal Amr, confirmed that there is a strong demand for purchasing foodstuffs in the local market, describing it as excellent, in conjunction with citizens’ preparations for the holy month.

Amr expected that the next few days would witness a peak in purchasing and shopping after the disbursement of salaries today or tomorrow, especially the demand for fresh materials, especially vegetables, red meat, poultry, and dairy derivatives.

He told the Jordanian News Agency (Petra) that local markets, commercial centers and consumer institutions are witnessing a great abundance in terms of the availability of various basic food commodities and Ramadan goods, stressing that importers and wholesalers prepared early to provide them in quantities sufficient for long periods.

He stressed that the prices of Ramadan goods are stable in the local market and may be lower than last season, indicating that workers in the sector are always trying to absorb any increases that may affect prices, especially imported materials, through hedging and increasing the quantities offered.

Amr stressed that the local market is characterized by multiple origins and a wide variety of imported goods, which enhances competition between importers, wholesalers and retailers and contributes to reducing the impact of price increases within the local market.

He pointed out the existence of annual or quarterly supply contracts with a number of major institutions, which helps in providing goods to consumers at competitive and relatively stable prices during the coming period, but he pointed to the rise in the prices of vegetable oils of various types since the end of last year, due to the increase in their prices in the global market, the decline in production in some producing countries, the impact of supply chains, and the rise in shipping costs, which affected their prices in the local market. He also pointed to the rise in cheese prices to increase the prices of dry animal milk globally.

It is noteworthy that the demand increases during the holy month for many food and basic commodities, most notably rice, sugar, red and white meat, dates, Qamar al-Din, juices, dairy products, cheeses, and vegetable oils.

The food sector is considered one of the main important commercial sectors in the Kingdom, and it currently includes 14,000 companies distributed among importers, wholesalers, and retail stores throughout the country, half of which are in the capital, and has provided approximately 200,000 job opportunities, the majority of which are for Jordanians.
