The electric car market around the world is witnessing an unprecedented transformation, with 22 million electric cars sold in just one year, a clear indication of the acceleration in the adoption of electric transportation globally. This comes in the year 2025, during which electric car sales recorded a jump of more than 25% compared to the previous year, reflecting a remarkable acceleration in the pace of the transition towards sustainable mobility solutions.

This transformation is not limited to the increase in the number of vehicles sold, but is accompanied by the influx of huge investments into the sector, as global investments in electric transportation amounted to about 893 billion dollars during the past year alone, in confirmation of growing investor confidence in the prospects of this market and its ability to reshape the global transportation sector.

The UAE is at the heart of the electrical transformation

The UAE is at the heart of this global transformation, with expectations indicating a major jump in the spread of electric cars locally.

According to estimates, the share of electric cars in total car sales in the country is expected to rise from 6 percent in 2025 to 15 percent by 2030, supported by government policies, expanding infrastructure, and increasing consumer awareness.

This rapid growth means an increasing need to enhance the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles, as expectations indicate that the number of public charging points in the Emirates will increase from about 6,000 points in 2025 to 16,000 points by 2030, to keep pace with the growing demand and ensure the ease of using electric vehicles on a large scale.

ADNOC Distribution is betting on expansion

In this context, ADNOC Distribution is betting on benefiting from the expected boom in the electric vehicle market, as it recently opened the sixth largest high-speed complex for charging electric vehicles in the world, in a move that reflects its ambitions to strengthen its position in this promising sector.

The company plans to open 20 fast electric charging complexes for electric vehicles by the end of 2027, as part of its strategy to support the transformation of the energy and transportation sector, and meet the growing demand for advanced charging solutions.

ADNOC Distribution is basing its expansion strategy on a wide network of more than 560 locations spread throughout the UAE, which gives it a strong competitive advantage and a high ability to expand rapidly and seize a major share of the electric vehicle charging market in the country in the coming years.

Expert opinion: Infrastructure is the key to transformation

For his part, Heiko Seitz, the global official responsible for electric mobility at PwC Middle East, stressed in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia the importance of the steps taken by ADNOC Distribution to deploy fast charging stations on a large scale in the Emirates, considering that this step is crucial for the development of the sector.

He added: “These initiatives provide energy for the fleets of cars spread today, enhance consumers’ awareness of cars and the energy consumed in them, and increase their confidence in the available means of transportation, especially with regard to the megawatts consumed and the energy generated from these stations.”

Seitz stressed that the relationship between the energy generated from charging stations and consumer awareness and their ability to consume this energy plays a major role in accelerating the adoption of electric cars in the Emirates and the region.

Solar energy and technology… supporting elements

Seitz pointed out that the UAE has great opportunities in the field of solar energy, pointing out that the percentage of energy generated from solar sources may reach 30 percent, compared to relying on batteries and traditional energy, which contributes significantly to reducing carbon emissions.

Heiko Seitz, global head of electric mobility at PwC Middle East, believes that we are moving quickly in the market now, and this technology requires great infrastructure, great efforts, and great tasks. This infrastructure also requires enormous capabilities and capabilities, so that charging points are located in appropriate locations.

He said: “We witnessed the spread of this technology in Europe, and now the Middle East has begun to move at the same pace.”

Three pillars of transformation

Seitz explained that the shift towards electric cars is based on three main pillars:

  • The first is prices, that is, the ability of consumers to purchase electric cars compared to diesel ones.
  • The second pillar is infrastructure, which is a crucial element when talking about the expansion and spread of electric cars, including the availability of charging points between cities and on main roads such as the road between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  • The third pillar is research and innovation, pointing to modern technologies that appeared at global exhibitions such as CES in Las Vegas, where batteries emerged capable of charging in just five minutes and providing a driving range of up to hundreds of kilometers, with higher levels of safety and reduced risks of ignition.

Seitz stressed that these innovations are likely to achieve major developments during the next ten years, which will enhance the competitiveness of electric cars compared to traditional vehicles, and leave a tangible impact on people’s daily lives.

With regard to solar energy, he stressed the need to link the expansion of electric cars with clean energy solutions, stressing that the availability of solar energy in the Emirates and many regions around the world allows the generation of energy needed for electric vehicles at a reasonable cost for consumers and producers alike, which reflects positively on the energy and transportation sectors.
