Opening an inclusive scout camp for children with Down syndrome to enhance social integration and life skills

Sarrah News – The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth, Dr. Mazen Abu Baqar, opened today, Thursday, the activities of the inclusive scout camp for children with Down syndrome, which was organized by the Hadab Association at the permanent scout camp in North Shuna.
During the opening, representing the Minister of Youth, Abu Baqar stressed the Ministry of Youth’s keenness to empower persons with disabilities and integrate them into various youth programs and activities, in line with national legislation and international agreements that protect their rights as an important part of society.
He said that organizing such inclusive camps and camps constitutes a practical model for enhancing the values of participation and giving, and provides young men and women with Down Syndrome real opportunities to integrate into volunteer work and community service, which enhances their self-confidence and develops their social and life skills.
Abu Baqar pointed to the Ministry’s continuity in developing youth center programs and spreading the culture of volunteer work and inclusive programs among young people from different groups, because of its important role in promoting the values of cooperation, giving, responsibility, belonging, and active citizenship.
For her part, the head of the Hadab Association for Down Syndrome Care, Panda Al-Assad, confirmed that the inclusive camps, which have reached 14 camps organized by the association, constitute an important space for empowering people with Down syndrome and integrating them into society, by providing them with the opportunity to participate in volunteer activities and interactive programs that develop their social skills, enhance their self-confidence, and help them build positive relationships with their peers and their surroundings.
She pointed out that the association is keen to diversify the programs within these camps, to include tourist visits, recreational, volunteer and environmental activities, because of their role in expanding the awareness of the participants and acquainting the community with their abilities and energies, stressing that integrating this group is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of institutions, families and the local community to ensure the provision of a supportive environment that allows them to participate effectively in public life.
In turn, the Director of Education for the Northern Jordan Valley District, Dr. Basma Fraihat, indicated the Ministry of Education’s keenness to promote inclusive education and cooperate with community initiatives that encourage volunteer work, because of its role in developing the spirit of giving and responsibility among children and building a generation capable of serving its community and country.
The opening ceremony of the camp, which lasted for 3 days, with the participation of 30 students with Down Syndrome from various regions of the Kingdom, included a presentation of success stories of the participants, their creativity and skills in various fields, in addition to national artistic performances and traditional costumes presented by the participants.
