Amman Today – The Minister of Environment, Dr. Ayman Suleiman, confirmed that climate action in Jordan is no longer just an environmental option, but has become an integrated national path linked to economic development and social justice, and is based on a participatory approach that ensures a fair distribution of burdens and benefits and enhances the ability of sectors and communities to withstand.
This came during his sponsorship today, Saturday, of the closing session of the “Justice Dialogues” series, which was held at the Movenpick Hotel – Dead Sea, and organized by the Regional Center for Energy and Climate Justice of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, with the participation of ministers, secretaries-general, representatives, notables, and representatives of government institutions, civil society organizations, and national partners.
Suleiman said that the National Climate Change Policy, the National Adaptation Plan, and the Nationally Determined Contributions document in its third edition constitute clear strategic frameworks to guide climate action on scientific and participatory foundations, explaining that aligning international commitments with national priorities contributes to attracting financing and enhancing implementation opportunities.
He pointed out that the vision of economic modernization, especially the green growth engine, represents a real opportunity to shift towards a more sustainable and resilient economy, stressing that implementing the executive program of the vision requires consolidating the principles of social justice, community responsibility and just transition, taking into account the conditions of workers, the most vulnerable groups and local communities.
He stated that Jordan has increased the contribution of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix to about 30 percent, in addition to expanding the use of electric and hybrid vehicles, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions, stressing the importance of enhancing infrastructure readiness and the ability of cities to adapt to the effects of climate change, especially in light of the increasing pressures on water resources and the recurrence of drought waves.
He explained that the sectors discussed in the dialogues, which include energy, agriculture, industry and tourism, represent basic pillars for implementing the vision of economic modernization, as they provide green job opportunities, support food security, and enhance economic growth and sustainable local development.
For her part, the Executive Director of the Regional Center for Energy and Climate Justice at Friedrich Ebert, Dina Al-Kasbi, confirmed that the closing session represents the culmination of the path of national dialogues that discussed the concept of a just transition and linking it to people’s reality, their livelihoods and their future.
She said that the dialogues, in which representatives of trade unions, employers, civil society organizations and researchers participated, focused on the energy, agriculture, tourism and industry sectors, within a participatory framework that allowed for the exchange of visions and the identification of common priorities.
She added that the just transition is not only a technical or environmental path, but rather a social, economic and human rights path based on fairness, decent work, social protection and active participation, calling for translating the outcomes of the dialogue into policies and implementation plans that ensure that no group is marginalized.
The session witnessed a presentation of the outcomes of the sectoral dialogues and an in-depth discussion on the mechanisms for transforming recommendations into practical programs and plans, in a way that supports national efforts to achieve a just and equitable transition that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and the promotion of social justice.
