Hebrew media revealed, on Tuesday, that tensions have arisen in recent days in Israeli-Jordanian relations, after Jordanian security forces cut “sideburns” on a number of Jews at a border crossing.
And the newspaper “Israel Today”, according to the translation of “Safa” agency, stated that the story began when the Jordanian security forces at the “Yitzhak Rabin” crossing, north of Eilat, cut “sideburns” a number of Jews before entering Jordan. Which angered the occupation government.
The Jordanian security justified the act by saying it came to “protect the Israelis; Fearing that there are distinguishing marks that facilitate the process of diagnosing their identities in Jordan.”
The Israeli Foreign Ministry considered the Jordanian behavior “an insult to the feelings of the Jews,” by deliberately concealing their features.
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen sent a protest note to the Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv, in which he expressed his “shock” at the behavior of the Jordanian authorities, calling for not repeating this.
Cohen said, “A group of 150 religious Jews were detained for 48 hours at the border crossing with Jordan until some of them cut their sideburns at the request of the Jordanian authorities.”
The Israeli minister also protested against Jordan’s ban on bringing in Jewish religious books, means of Jewish prayers, and “halal” food according to the Jewish religion.
