Members of the Journalists Syndicate Council called for reducing penalties in Articles 15, 16, and 17 of the draft Cybercrime Law of 2023.

According to parliamentary sources, these demands were made during a closed meeting with Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al-Safadi, while members of the Syndicate Council entered another closed meeting with the head of the Legal Committee, Ghazi Thuneibat.

The articles for which the Journalists Syndicate Council demanded a reduction in penalties relate to the publication of false or defamatory news or news that includes rumours.

The sources revealed that the Speaker of Parliament promised during the closed meeting to study the union’s demands.

This meeting comes at a time when media professionals and journalists called for a sit-in in front of the Journalists Syndicate in the capital, Amman, to demand the withdrawal of the controversial cybercrime bill.
