Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al-Safadi said, on Sunday, that the draft cybercrime law for the year 2023 did not take the form of urgency, and the financial fines in the draft are high.
He added, during his chairmanship of a part of the legal committee meeting Sunday as part of the dialogues that it launched to discuss the draft cybercrime law for the year 2023 in the presence of experts and representatives of civil society institutions, that the high financial fines mentioned in the draft law do not target the group that is keen on the safety and security of society, but rather affects the group of those who do not stop abusing and sabotaging society and spreading rumors and poisons.
He pointed out that the Council stands with the imposition of these fines against those who offend and seek sedition, distortion, extortion and other irresponsible practices.
And he indicated that the House of Representatives supports freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of the media and the press, and we also accept other opinions and constructive criticism that leads to achieving the public interest, but at the same time we must stand by tightening the penalty and fines against abusers and practitioners of extortion and targeting society and its safety.
Al-Safadi stressed that the parliament deals with the provisions of the draft law in accordance with the highest levels of national responsibility and without any personalization, calling on civil society institutions to communicate with representatives and dialogue to come up with a consensual law.
