Amman – Khalil Qandil
The speakers at the symposium held by the Coordination Committee calling for the withdrawal of the draft cybercrime law at the headquarters of the Islamic Action Front party this evening under the title “Repercussions and Effects of the draft cybercrime law stressed the seriousness of the new draft law’s muzzling, restriction of freedom of opinion and expression, and the prevention of criticism of officials, especially since Jordan faces great internal and external entitlements, which requires action to confront this law, demand its response and prevent its passage.
The speakers at the symposium moderated by the Deputy Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Front Party, Eng. Wael Al-Sakka, with the participation of a crowd of secretaries-generals of parties and non-political, trade union and media personalities, stressed the need to unify the national effort from the political, societal and popular forces and to coordinate efforts in confronting this law, which they described as a step towards the execution of the path of advancing political and partisan life.
The Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Front Party, Eng. Murad Al-Adaileh, warned of the danger of the new draft cybercrime law, pointing to the consensus of Jordanians in its rejection of what it represents of targeting every Jordanian citizen, confiscating freedom of opinion and expression, and silencing mouths in front of great internal and external entitlements, especially with regard to the Palestinian cause, and targeting political, partisan and trade union figures who have real positions on these issues, in addition to that this law comes just before the elections, which are supposed to be the culmination of the modernization of political and partisan life.
Al-Adaileh stressed that this law is an execution of the project to modernize the political system and that it is a political crime against the country, adding, “There is no need for the prime minister to tour universities to promote political and partisan life, while such a law is issued that threatens everyone who will make any mistake on electronic communication sites.
Al-Adaileh added, “Whoever drafted this law put a real recipe for a social explosion, preventing them from expressing their opinion, which pushes them to explode in light of the tension, poverty and high prices, and immunizing those responsible for accountability and exposing citizens to arrest just for expressing their opinion. Committing a crime on the ground now exposes a citizen to a lesser penalty than committing it on the electronic network, and it also affects the judiciary because it does not leave the judge space to estimate the crime, intent and punishment,” stressing the need to work to confront this law and work to overthrow it.
While the Secretary-General of the Labor Party, Dr. Rula Al-Hroub, confirmed a number of questions about the reasons for sending this law during an extraordinary session of the House of Representatives and the citizens’ preoccupation with high school exams and not publishing it except on the eve of the opening session of the House of Representatives, under an effort to pass this law that includes dangerous articles, especially Article 15 of the law, and what it includes in Article 39 of the articles that allow the government to set and impose fines of up to 40 thousand or more and the possibility of doubling them, and to grant the Public Prosecution to move a complaint without claiming a personal right and it targets every Who criticizes officials?
Al-Hroub indicated that this law erased what the press body had achieved through years of canceling arrest pending publication cases, and that not only Articles 15, 16, 17 and 19 affect journalistic work, but there are other articles that limit the freedom of the press and publishing on websites, so it represents collective punishment with the aim of silencing mouths and killing any space that citizens, journalists and media professionals exercise in criticizing the official in the public site and directing public performance, adding, “We are all targeted.”
Al-Hroub called for participation in the electronic storm on Sunday evening against the draft cybercrime law and the stand that will be held in the coming days in front of the House of Representatives in rejection of the law and the press conference of the Coordination Committee to express the point of view of the Jordanian people and community forces towards this law, which will succeed in working on its response if all forces unite in confronting it.
Meanwhile, a member of the Political Bureau of the Jordanian Democratic Popular Unity Party, Imad Al-Malhi, stressed the need to focus on the political dimension of this law, which seeks to silence mouths, especially that Jordan is facing important developments at the internal and external levels, and that this law requires work to withdraw it completely.
