The total commitments of the World Bank to Jordan during the current fiscal year exceeded one billion dollars, from loan programmes, regular projects and grants, according to data from the World Bank Group.

Since the fiscal year that began in early July 2022 and ended on June 30, the Bank and Jordan signed 6 programs and projects worth $1.039 billion, aimed at supporting efforts in the field of enhancing the efficiency of the water and electricity sectors, and supporting climate-friendly investments for the government based on partnership with the private sector. , agricultural sector, reform administration and municipal support.

On September 29, 2022, the World Bank agreed to finance the program “Enhancing the resilience of the agricultural sector and developing the value chain and innovation (ARDI)”, at a value of $ 125 million, to improve the resilience of the agricultural sector in Jordan to climate change, increase competitiveness and inclusiveness, and ensure food security. In the medium and long term, in line with the national plan for sustainable agriculture and also with the new vision of economic modernization.

The program is scheduled to provide the necessary funding during the implementation period of the project 2022-2027 for about 30,000 agricultural families to adopt climate-friendly and water-saving agricultural practices, and a training program designed according to the needs of the agricultural sector, in addition to creating about 12,000 job opportunities for the people of Jordan, especially women and youth. In addition, the program will provide economic opportunities for Syrian refugees.

On March 31, 2023, the World Bank agreed to finance a program to enhance the efficiency of the electricity sector at a value of $250 million. The program will support the implementation of good practices for corporate governance, at the level of the National Electric Power Company, procedures for timely collection of electricity consumption bills, and sound planning based on Principles of economic efficiency, competitive procurement of new generation investments, and strengthening the assessment of fiscal risks from public-private partnerships in this sector.

The program aims to improve the efficiency of the electricity sector in Jordan, maintain the great progress made by the country in the field of dependence on electricity services, and strengthen the governance of this sector, as Jordan has made great progress in improving the ability to rely on electricity supplies, and increasing the proportion of renewable energy within the supply mix. Electricity from 6% in 2017 to 26% in 2021, and the introduction of private investments in this sector, through partnerships between the public and private sectors.

On April 7, 2023, the World Bank approved an additional financing of $400 million for a comprehensive, transparent, and climate-responsive investment program in Jordan in a way that leads to enhancing climate-responsive public and private investments, in addition to encouraging job creation, especially for women, and strengthening the effectiveness of government action through By developing participatory policies, data and evidence.

The additional financing aims to further enhance the quality of public investment and prioritize climate-responsive public investment, including through public-private partnerships.

On June 15, 2023, the World Bank approved funding of $250 million to improve the efficiency of water services in Jordan, by rehabilitating water distribution networks, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening the drought management system in the Kingdom, as Jordan is one of the countries that suffer the most. of water scarcity in the world.

The Bank expects that the results of this project will be large and wide-ranging, as it will have a direct positive impact on the population in Jordan as well as for the benefit of the globe in a broader way, through reducing water waste, reducing electricity consumption, and improving water management systems. It is estimated that approximately 1.6 million people will benefit from improved water services. Water network management will also be supported for the benefit of farmers and industries, building economic productivity, and strengthening the country’s resilience to climate shocks.

On June 28, 2023, the Bank agreed to provide additional financing for the “Strengthening Reform Management” project in Jordan at a value of $9.3 million, as an extension of the project launched in 2019 to coordinate and follow up on a reform matrix that the government announced its commitment to at the London Initiative Conference for the same year.

According to data seen by the “Kingdom”, the approval came after restructuring the original project, worth $6.5 million, as the government aims to extend the project for a period of 18 months to match the schedule of the updated reform matrix.

On June 30, 2023, the World Bank agreed to provide a fourth additional grant for the Municipal Services and Social Adaptation Project in Jordan, at a value of $4.7 million, according to data obtained by The Kingdom.

According to the data, the new grant aims to help Jordanian municipalities and host communities affected by the influx of Syrian refugees to enhance services and provide job opportunities for Jordanians and Syrians, and enhance their ability to support local economic development.

During the previous fiscal year 2022, the total commitments of the World Bank to Jordan amounted to $547 million, compared to $840 million in the previous year.

While the total commitments of the World Bank to Jordan in 2020 amounted to approximately $714 million, while the “highest” commitments were in 2019; Which amounted to about $ 1.59 billion.
