The World Meteorological Organization said that the high temperatures gripping large parts of the northern hemisphere and the devastating floods caused by heavy rains that disrupt the lives and livelihoods of millions of people underscore the urgent need for more climate action.

According to the official website of the United Nations organization, the month of June witnessed the highest average global temperatures ever, while heat waves continued until early July, and heavy rains and floods caused dozens of deaths and affected the lives of millions of people in the United States, Japan, China and India.

The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Petteri Taalas, said that extreme weather patterns that are increasingly frequent with climate change “have a significant impact on human health, ecosystems, economies, agriculture, energy and water supplies.” He called for intensifying efforts to help society adapt to “what has unfortunately become the new normal.”

Heatwaves are among the deadliest natural hazards, killing thousands of people every year.
