The Florida Keys celebrated their bicentennial, on Monday, along the Gulf of Mexico with a lemon pie measuring more than 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter — which organizers intend to document as a world record.

Eighth wonder in the world

During the Civil War, Key West remained in Union hands as a naval blockade base for Confederate shipping, and in the early 20th century, Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler led the construction of the Florida Keys Oversea Railroad that became widely recognized as the eighth wonder of the world.

And for nearly 6 months of his presidency from 1945 to 1953, Harry Truman ruled the United States from his “Little White House” in Key West, now the only presidential museum in Florida.

Key lime pie, popularized in the late 19th century, Key West is a large part of the heritage of the southernmost island chain of the United States, and in 2006 the state legislature designated the pie as the “official Florida pie”.

The bicentennial big pie, prepared by local chefs, included traditional graham cracker crust and whipped cream plus juice from several thousand limes.
